Cantabria: travel guides

Cantabria and family holidays

Cantabria is an autonomous community in northern Spain, facing the Cantabrian Sea to the north and bordering the Basque Country to the east. Much of the Cantabrian charm derives from its geography, where a coast lashed by the sea breeze meets mountains and the natural beauty of the Picos de Europa National Park, creating a landscape full of contrasts, with snow-capped peaks, valleys, vast green meadows, pristine beaches and majestic cliffs over the sea. The diversity of the landscape allows you to enjoy various activities, from mountain sports, such as hiking, climbing and skiing, to thermal spas, rural tourism, fishing, horse riding and tours of cities of history and art.

Camping in Cantabria

In the midst of this triumph of nature, not surprisingly, Cantabria offers a wide range of campsites and holiday resorts, ideal for sports lovers and outdoor excursions, as well as for families with children looking for natural landscapes and wholesome fun. The campsites of Cantabria are located mainly near the coast, which has over 60 white sandy beaches, but there are also facilities inland, in particular, in the vicinity of the Picos de Europa National Park, surrounded by wilderness and close to the Deva river. There are also charming campsites at seaside resorts such as Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera, ideal for visiting Covadonga and walking the Cares and Potes trails.

Historic cities and other places to visit

The capital Santander is an obligatory stop when on holiday in Cantabria. An Episcopal and university city, Santander mixes monuments and buildings of great artistic and cultural interest with a liveliness given by the presence of students and a calendar of events, including the renowned Santander International Music Festival. Ideal for all the family is a visit to the Peninsula de la Magdalena garden park. A holiday in Cantabria also offers the opportunity to visit archaeological attractions dating from the Upper Palaeolithic, such as the prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
