Castilla La Mancha: travel guides

Castile-La Mancha is an autonomous community in the centre of Spain, the third largest by area, and is located just a few kilometres from the capital Madrid, in the west, and, close to the sea, borders the Valencian Community to the south. With the city of Toledo as its capital, Castile-La Mancha offers a fascinating blend of natural landscapes and cities of art and culture with a strong Spanish identity.

Cities of art and culture

Those who choose a camping holiday in Castile-La Mancha can take advantage of the rich artistic and cultural offerings of this Spanish community, which, over the centuries saw the arrival of Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and finally Christians. The result, as often is the case in Spain and particularly in the centre and south of the country, is a fascinating quantity and quality of artefacts that remain to this day. Celebrated also in literature, thanks to Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Castile-La Mancha boasts cities of art and culture of immense charm, such as Cuenca with its famous Casas Colgadas, or hanging houses, a well-deserved UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also worth visiting are Albacete and the capital Toledo, with its majestic bridges over the Tagus River and monuments such as the Gothic cathedral, with the altarpiece ‘El Transparente’, or ‘The Transparent’, by Narciso Tomé, and the Alcázar fortress, which tells of the Spanish Civil War. Those visiting this region can also dive into the past at its numerous archaeological sites.

Camping and nature

Though not on the sea, Castile-La Mancha is a great tourist destination for campers, especially for those who want direct contact with natural wilderness. The autonomous community has an incredible number of national parks and nature reserves, the most famous being the Tablas de Daimiel and Cabañeros national parks. Beyond excursions in nature, sport and relaxation, Castile-La Mancha offers many opportunities to discover local traditions, for example, through village and food and wine festivals, with unmissable typical dishes and wines such as Valdepeñas.
