Galicia: travel guides

Galicia, sea and traditions

Located in the north-west corner of Spain, above Portugal and facing the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, Galicia is a land of legends, witches and pilgrims. For centuries, this fascinating region of Spain has hosted countless travellers fascinated by its landscapes, traditions and cuisine of great richness and variety. The capital is Santiago de Compostela, with its famous sanctuary, which is the final stop along the Way of Saint James, so it is easy to understand how camping is at home in this area that belongs to ‘Green Spain’.

Campsites in A Coruña

A charming city on the Galician Atlantic coast, also called the Coast of Death, A Coruña, or La Coruña, offers beautiful landscapes, alternating beaches, cliffs and fishing villages that change character with the tides. The green mountains inland, contrasting with the coastline, offer picture postcard views and opportunities for excursions into the nature reserves and natural parks of the region. Rich in cultural events, especially during the summer, A Coruña and its province provide unmissable attractions for tourists, such as a visit to the Tower of Hercules, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and typical dishes including Pulpo a la Gallega, or Gallician style octopus, for lovers of fish.

Santiago de Compostela, art, nature and the pilgrimage route

Staying at a campsite near Santiago de Compostela is a common choice for pilgrims and visitors to one of the most famous cities of Galicia. As the final stop on the Way of Saint James, which ends just in front of the cathedral, Santiago de Compostela is a very busy city all year round. Besides the pilgrims, many of them young people from all around the world, the city is also a tourist destination of great appeal in its own right due to its artistic and gastronomic heritage, with such famous wines as Ribeiro and Albariño.

Le Cies Islands and other cities of Galicia

Much appreciated for spas, as in the case of Ourense, Galicia has plenty of cities and towns to visit. Besides La Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, Lugo and Pontevedra stand out, the former with its famous Roman walls and the latter with typical Pazos, or manor houses. To be discovered are the Cies Islands with their beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, cliffs and picture postcard views across to the city of Vigo.
